The Rotary Club of Concord is sponsoring a cross-country ski race for skiers of all ages and abilities on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. at DCR Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle to benefit education for girls in the Ivory Coast. A kid-friendly event, there will be trophies for winners in many categories: males and females ages 12 and under, 13 to 18 years, 18 to 80 and yes, over 80!  Everyone wins a goody bag. Thanks to our sponsors, Emerson Hospital, Norel Service Co., Inc., Hammond Residential Real Estate, and Spaulding Management LLC, Rotary has an encouraging start toward its goal of $3,000 but more support is needed. The registration fee is $10 per skier or $5 for groups of four or more. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. Rental skis in every size are available.

Three Rotary Clubs have joined forces to embark on an International Humanitarian Grant designed to help young women in the Ivory Coast use their science education to improve living situations. The Rotary Clubs of Concord Massachusetts, Ann Arbor Michigan, and Abidjan Bietry in the Ivory Coast will provide curriculum, personnel, and kits for girls to build and maintain solar home lighting units. Solar lighting will replace more expensive and dangerous kerosene lanterns currently used in Ivory Coast homes. The young women will also develop solar business start-ups to ensure that the project is sustainable.
